CeSAC is seated in Caraglio’s spinning mill, the most ancient “silk factory” in Europe, a unique production case history in Piedmont’s seventeenth century. Giovanni Girolamo Galleani built it between 1676 and 1678 and it looks like a fortified residence; the residential parts are flanked by the production area, with its “stoves” for reeling and the imposing “silk mills” for the twisting of the yarn, which were rebuilt during the restoration process. The CeSAC was born in 1999 following a joint effort by “Regione Piemonte” and Marcovaldo Cultural Association, aimed at strengthening the presence of contemporary art in the north-western part of Piedmont, with a structure that could operate within the art system on a national and international level, especially with similar French Bodies or Organizations. Conceived as place for experimentation on models of offer and innovative cultural production, it means to draw the territory towards the different and most significant expressions of contemporary, European and international artistic research, so that artists may interact with the lively forces of local society and help it express itself through art. The program includes exhibiting activities, public art interventions interacting with local communities, educational, research and study activities and programs for the general public, artists and young art historians.
