Contemporary Myths
Egyptian artist Wael Shawky, presents a series of recent works – videos, installations and drawings – which, taking cue from her context of origin, investigates the relations between politics, culture and religion, highlighting the contradictions of international social norms.
For this exhibition Cittadellarte co-produced, together with Festival Theater der Welt, Essen, Shawky’s new video installation. The video, Cabaret Crusades: The Horror Show File, takes inspiration from a string-puppet show and reflects upon the crusades that took place between the 11th and 13th Centuries: a mixture of drama and cynicism that seem to belong to the present day.
The exhibit – curated by Judith Wielander – opens on June 25, 2010 and is on until April 30, 2011.
